Baked Oatmeal

23 08 2006

There are some foods that are quintessentially TMI…things that you can count on getting served regardless of the year you go, where you go, or who is doing the cooking for you.  Things like Kool-Aid, peanut butter and jellies, and baked oatmeal.  I’ve never met anyone who has gone on Teen Missions and eaten baked oatmeal who didn’t love it.  In fact, many of my kids feverishly copied down the recipe before going home.

But most people have never had baked oatmeal, unless they’ve gone on TMI or are the family member of someone who has.  The eating of baked oatmeal ushers one into a rare fraternity.

I am going to give you non-TMIers the rare opportunity to try baked oatmeal for yourselves!  Here’s the recipe.  And I’m giving it to you as it’s given to us.  A recipe that feeds 30!  Taken directly from the TMI “Feeding The Multitudes” cookbook:

A quick division by five ought to have this recipe at a nice manageable size!  If you try it out, let me know what you think!  If you like it when you aren’t on TMI, you should consider going on TMI.  There is nothing like a big piece of hot steaming baked oatmeal to make a tummy feel great on a cold African winter morning!  Or on whatever kind of morning your team wakes up to wherever they are!

I cook mine with white sugar, not brown, and you don’t have to pour the warm milk over it if you don’t wish to.  It’s delicious all by itself!

Hey Linda, could you send me the recipe for angel biscuits??? Cuz my Zam Jam needs to be used, but I can’t use it on anything other than your biscuits! That would pretty much be murdering it…

I came across your site while looking for a recipe for baked oatmeal. It’s not just a TMI thing – it’s pretty common to find it in Amish areas like Lancaster, PA. That’s where I first tasted it, and yes, it is totally yummy. Just thought you’d like to know! Oh, and thanks for the recipe!

Oh my goodness! I can’t believe I’ve stumbled upon the actual TMI recipe for baked oatmeal. I’ve been craving this stuff for days and want to induct my husband and children into the club!

I haven’t browsed the rest of your website yet, but I’m assuming you are connected to TMI in some way. I was a team member on Malta Drama ‘92, and an Assistant Leader on France ‘94.

Thanks for the recipe, I can’t wait to try it!

hooray! i was searching for this recipe, figuring that even if i found a recipe – it wouldn’t be Just Like the TMI one – but bam! here it is. thank you SO MUCH. i loved eating this on the cold Australian mornings in ‘00 — i went three more times (egypt, sweden, china) but our leaders never made it – a shame! i’ve been craving it all day. again, thanks so much. your site has brought back so many memories – i’d really like to help lead a team to Zambia – so i guess i should start prayin’ ! xoxo – jessica

Jessica…you went on four TMI teams and only one of your teams ate B.O.?? Sad day! :-) I hope you come back here and let me know how it turned out for you…And maybe we’ll end up leading a Zambia team together…and you’ll be like…”hey! I got the baked oatmeal recipe from your blog!” :-)

I too was searching for this recipe on the internet but really wanted the teen missions recipe specifically. I haven’t eaten it since 1982 when I went to S. Africa with T.M.I. I am very happy that you posted this recipe here–thanks. I went back with T.M.I. as an ass’t leader to Hong Kong in 1987 but we never made it. I also sent my daughter with teen missions when she was 12–she liked it but would have liked it better had she been on a team that went somewhere besides Florida’s bootcamp. They stayed there and fixed it up. I think that would have been 2002. I don’t know if they had baked oatmeal or not, I will have to ask her sometime.

I also was searching out this recipe and was so happy to find it on your blog! I was on the ‘91 Sweeden and ‘92 Russia Boot Camp teams.
Those were some of the best summers ever! I have been wanting to go back on the mission field ever since. Maybe when my 2 babies are grown. =0)
I wish you all the best, and will pray for everything to go well for you there.
Have a blast!

Glad your search brought you to my blog. I hope you’ll come back and let me know how your B.O. turned out!

If you ever get the chance to lead a team, do it. It is hard, but sooooo rewarding. TMI is the gift that keeps on giving! :-)

Thank You for posting this. Kate and I have been looking for this recipe for a while now and even tried one that didn’t come out the way we remembered it. Katie went to Suriname South America in ‘94 and I went to Europe in ‘99. The picture of the recipe brought back memories.

Thanks so much. I was an assist leader on Zambia B&V in 99 ( I think). I have craved this recipe for years and even searched for it online a few years back. On a whim I thought I would check for it again. Thanks so much. I am making it for my family of 6 tomorrow for breakfast.

Thanks for the baked oatmeal recipe. I was a young assistant leader in 1986 and made this recipe myself many times but had lost track of my TMI cookbook! Thanks for the posting.
